2008 was a very eventful year with lots of work drama relating to Mark’s involvement with flamingos. Because of his association with the Flamingo Environmental Trust and the Save the Flamingo Association, and because of a complaint from Group1 (a developer which proposes to construct 6500 houses on the property adjacent to Kamfers Dam), Mark and two of his colleagues were suspended from their positions at the Department of Tourism, Environment & Conservation. Fortunately, Mark had at that time already accepted another position at BirdLife South Africa. The Department has however pursued with their relentless efforts to humiliate Mark and the matter is now being fought in the courts. Mark took up the position of Executive Director of BirdLife South Africa on 1 October 2008.
