Flamingo monitoring at Kamfers Dam

For more than 10 years Kamfers Dam’s flamingos have been counted monthly. Remote methods are now being explored (in collaboration with Geoff Groom and Ib Krag Petersen from Denmark) to count the flamingos using aerial images. During the recent flamingo breeding event, a series of images was taken of the flamingo island on a monthly basis. These images were imported into Adobe Photoshop and accurate counts were made of the number of flamingos (adults and chicks) on the island.
